On 21 March 1972, UH-1H 69-15708 was on a flight from Bien Hoa AB, South Vietnam to Vung Tau, South Vietnam. At 1145 hours approximately 12m south of Long Thanh Army Airfield, the pilot noticed a slight feedback in the controls and the crew felt a vibration in the aircraft that increased in intensity for 3-10 seconds at which time a loud bang was heard from the rear of the aircraft. The aircraft yawed to the right and the nose dipped to the left. The pilot took corrective action to stabilize the aircraft and the co-pilot took control of the aircraft. The crew chief looked out to the rear of the aircraft and reported that they had lost their tail rotor and 90 degree gear box. The aircraft commander elected to use a nearby dirt practice strip as his intended landing area for a running landing. During final approach at a point approximately 50-100 feet above the ground, the aircraft started slowly turning in a circle. The aircraft made three complete 360 degree turns and landed in a plowed field approximately 50 southeast of the intended landing area. There were no injuries or fire and the crew departed the aircraft without further mishap.
