    1940

    Constructed as a X-90.
    The X-90 was a low-wing cantilever monoplane with two-seats in tandem under an enclosed canopy. It had a fixed conventional landing gear and was powered by a 225 hp (168 kW) Lycoming R-680 engine - It had wooden wings and a steel tube forward fuselage in order minimize use of aluminium.

    New construction number, 90000, assigned to the airframe.

    24 October 1940

    To Stearman Aircraft Division of Boeing Airplane Co, Wichita, KS with new c/r N21924 (X90, 90000).

    16 December 1940

    1942

    Converted to a X-91.
    The aircraft was re-engined with a 450 hp (336 kW) Pratt and Whitney R-985 engine and became Model X-91.

    1942

    Redesignated as XBT-17.
    For evaluation by USAAF.

    1942

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Army Air Force with s/n 42-8726.

    USAAF did not proceed with an order - this prototype remained the only aircraft built.

    22 June 1948

    Civil registration, N21924, cancelled.
