    Competed at the National Championship Air Races in the Unlimited class. The primary pilot was Marvin *Lefty* Gardner. Qualified in 26th place with an average speed of 330.80 mph. Raced in the Medallion race. Finished in 3rd place with an average speed of 324.18 mph. Raced in the Medallion 1 race. Finished in 3rd place with an average speed of 320.13 mph. After crossing the finish line to win this race, Chuck Hall pulled up sharply and climbed for altitude. As he did so, there was a loud explosion in the engine. The engine had injested an intake valve and tore itself to pieces internally. Hall was unable. to make the runway and landed out in Lemon Valley off the end of Runway 26, damaging, only the prop, the flaps, the leading edge of the right wing, the dog house, and intake. The pilot was unharmed.

    Appeared at the National Championship Air Races to compete in the Unlimited class, but did not qualify. The primary pilot was Marvin *Lefty* Gardner. It is possible the P-38 was there for the airshow portion of the races and was not actually a competitor.

    25 June 2001

    Crashed.
    The accident occurred at the Greenwood-Leflore Airport (GWO) Greenwood, MS, United States while on decent. The damage was substantial. The Lockheed P-38L-5LD Lightning was being ferried from Tullahoma, Tennessee, to its home base in Texas following its participation in an air show. During descent into the Greenwood, Mississippi area for refueling, the left engine backfired, ran roughly and the cockpit filled with thick smoke...
