    October 1947

    Constructed as a XF-85.

    Contract initiated for two model 27D aircraft in 1945, which were completed in late 1947, which were then given the designation XP-85, but by the time of USAF acceptance the aircraft were redesignated as XF-85.

    Transported by ground. Delivered to Ames Aeronautical Research Laboratory, NAS Moffett, CA.
    Shipped here for wind tunnel tests.

    8 January 1948

    Preparations for wind tunnel tests completed. When being lifted onto the support pylons, the sky hook latch disengaged due to faulty assembly and the forward section of the Goblin was severely damaged. (Baugher).

    Circa February 1948

    Transported by ground. Delivered to McDonnell Aircraft, Saint. Louis, MO.
    Returned for repairs.

    March 1949

    Transported by ground. Delivered to Muroc AFB, CA.

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Air Force with s/n 46-0523.

    Notes: The McDonnell XF-85 Goblin was an American prototype fighter aircraft conceived during World War II by McDonnell Aircraft. It was intended to be deployed from the bomb bay of the giant Convair B-36 bomber as a parasite fighter. The XF-85s intended role was to defend bombers from hostile interceptors, a need demonstrated during World War II. Two prototypes were constructed before the program was terminated

    First flight.
    First flight captive under EB-29B.

    8 April 1949

    First flight.
    First and only free flight. Last flight of the program. Severe turbulence and loss of directional stability, prevented a hook-up to the B-29 and forced the pilot to make an emergency landing on the lakebed.

    Transported by ground. Delivered to United States Air Force Museum, Patterson Field (East Side), Dayton, OH.
