    Constructed as a C-53D-DO by Douglas at Santa Monica, CA.

    Circa 1942

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Army Air Force with s/n 42-68738.

    Transferred to 62nd Troop Carrier Squadron, North Africa.
    G. Richard Grimes commented (11 August 2015): 1942 A/C 68738 was assigned to my dad, Glenn R. Grimes, Maj, USAF retired, (deceased) and Richard Stevens (final rank unknown) who subsequently flew the a/c to North Africa. 738 was assigned to the 62nd Troop Carrier Squadron.They flew the invasion of Sicly, Italy, and subsequent missions until they were transferred to England to prepare for the D-day invasion.

    Converted to a DC-3A.
