    Constructed as a YRF-110 by McDonnell at Saint Louis, Missouri, USA.
    Order placed for two YRF-110A reconnaissance aircraft, converted on the line from F4H-1.

    18 September 1962

    Redesignated as YRF-4C-14-MC.

    9 August 1963

    First flight.

    1963

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Air Force with s/n 62-12200.

    By 1965

    Loaned to McDonnell Aircraft Corp.

    1965

    Converted to a YF-4E.
    Modified as an aerodynamic prototype for the F-4E.

    7 August 1965

    First flight.
    First flight as YF-4E.

    From 1969 to 1972

    Converted to a YF-4E-SFCS.
    Converted as Survivable Flight Control System (SFCS) prototype. Used as a test bed for such advanced ideas as F-4 leading edge wing slats and the Fly-By Wire concept.

    29 April 1972

    First flight.
    First flight post-conversion to SFCS.

    1974

    A final modification added distinctive wing-like canard surfaces to examine the Precision Aircraft Control Technology (PACT) configuration for mission and performance improvements. (NMUSAF).

    First flight.
    First flight with PACT modifications.

    10 January 1979

    Struck off Strength/Charge from the United States Air Force.

    1979

    Ferry flight. Delivered to National Museum of the United States Air Force, Wright Field, Dayton, OH.
    Flight delivered from McDonnell-Douglas.
