    Constructed as a PB2Y-3.

    1942

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Navy with BuNo 7099.

    March 1943

    Converted to a PB2Y-3R.

    Circa March 1943

    Transferred to Transport Squadron 4 (VR-4), NAS Oakland, CA.

    18 October 1943

    Damaged.
    Damaged landing in Biscayne Bay, Miami, FL.

    1944

    Converted to a PB2Y-5R.

    Circa August 1945

    Converted to a PB2Y-5Z.
    Outfitted as a flag transport with plush quarters.

    28 August 1945

    Departed Saipan. Served as an executive transport taking the staff of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz to Tokyo for the Japanese surrender ceremony on 2nd September 1945. Carried Rear Admiral Forrest B. Sherman (Fleet Admiral Nimitz deputy) to Tokyo Bay for formal surrender ceremonies.

    Circa November 1945

    Redesignated as PB2Y-5R.

    From 1946 to 1977

    To Hughes Tool Company, Houston, TX with new c/r N69003.
    Howard Hughes used this plane for training in preparing to fly his HK-1 flying boat. Was maintained airworthy into the 1960s.

    From 1949 to 1970

    Assigned to NAS Terminal Island, Long Beach, CA for storage.

    By 1975

    Placed on display with Spruce Goose Memorial, Long Beach, CA.
    Displayed outside the memorial building.

    1977

    To National Naval Aviation Museum, NAS Pensacola, Pensacola, FL.
    Donated by Hughes Tool Company.

    Transported by ship.
    Barged from California through the Panama Canal to Pensacola.

    Notes: The last three remaining crew of the #7099 at a reunion in the museum in Pensacola.Leonard W. Cowan, Navigator: Leonard Braswell, Engineer: Jack Weller, Radioman. All on the flight from Sai Pan to Tokyo. The first US Plane to land in Tokyo Harbor for the signing of the Japanese Peace Treaty. The original Flight Chart is behind these gentlemen.
