Incident occurred at the Dekalb Peachtree Airport, Chamblee, GA. There was a fire or explosion in flight while on final approach to land. There was a fire or explosion on the ground during the landing rollout. The factors included; engine fire. Report remarks include: Periodic inspection 1 1/2 hrs prior accident.

Raced in Heat 1 Bronze. Finished in 1st place with an average speed of 323.151 mph. Raced in Heat 2 Bronze. Finished in 6th place with an average speed of 323.741 mph. Raced in the Silver Semi-Final race. Finished in 5th place with an average speed of 316.742 mph. While joining the formation for the start of the Friday Silver Race suffered coolant problems, delcared a may-day and landed before the start of the race streaming coolant and with a very hot engine. In the Silver Race actually finished in 4th place but was penalized for cutting pylon #5 on lap #10.

    Competed at the California National Air Races in the Unlimited class. The primary pilot was Daniel Martin. Qualified in 6th place with an average speed of 348.202 mph. Raced in the Consolation race. Finished in 5th place with an average speed of 345.971 mph. Started the Championship race, but did not finish.

    18 September 1982

    Crashed.
    The accident occurred at the Stead AFB Airport (4SD) Reno, NV, United States while maneuvering. The damage was substantial. The engine failed caught fire during the national championship air races. The pilot stated he was pre-occupied trying toput out the engine fire turned base too late. The aircraft landed short of the runway on a poorly graded road the pilot lost control of the aircraft.
